Lead the Movement to End Food Waste: Become a Board Member

The board is specifically seeking those with experience in communications, marketing, branding, professional fundraising, policy advocacy, facilities management, and/or human resources. Individuals with a sustainability, food waste reduction, government or government relations background should also consider applying.

Make Food Not Waste is seeking diverse, dedicated and experienced individuals to serve as Board Members. The Board Member will play a critical role in guiding and advising the organization, fostering strategic growth, and providing skills, expertise and resources to support the successful execution of our mission and vision. The board is specifically seeking those with experience in communications, marketing, branding, professional fundraising, policy advocacy, facilities management, and/or human resources. Individuals with a sustainability, food waste reduction, government or government relations background should also consider applying.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership and Governance

  • Provide input into decisions of MFNW and take an active role at meetings.
  • Be present and fully prepared for regular and special board meetings.
  • Adhere to bylaws.
  • Adhere to policies and resolutions, including our commitment to serve and code of conduct.
  • Be transparent in decision-making, including adhering to our conflict of interest policy.
  • Support board development and recruitment efforts to maintain a diverse and skilled board of directors.

2. Financial 

  • Review financial reports, budgets, and policies to make informed decisions.

3. Strategic Planning

  • Collaborate with other board members, the organization, and other stakeholders, as relevant, to develop and implement the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Support monitoring progress toward strategic goals.

4. Fundraising and Resource Development

  • Support the development team to secure financial and other resources.
  • Support the organization financially at any level deemed meaningful and appropriate by the member.
  • Volunteer at events to support organizations initiatives.

5. Advocacy and Community Engagement

  • Represent Make Food Not Waste in the community, educating the public and advocating for policies, legislation, initiatives, and other opportunities at the local, state, and national level that align with and support our mission.
  • Foster relationships with community leaders, organizations, and stakeholders to build support to reduce food waste and its environmental impact.

6. Culture and Communication

  • Promote and model healthy board and organizational culture.
  • Contribute to and facilitate good communication among board members.
  • Any other tasks as needed to ensure the board and organization achieve the strategic goals.
  • Serve on at least one board committee.

Qualifications

  • Experience in communications, marketing, branding, professional fundraising, policy advocacy, facilities management, and/or human resources.  
  • Proven experience in professional leadership or board governance desired.
  • Strong passion for and commitment to addressing food waste as a solution to climate change.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and networking skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders.

Time Commitment

This is a volunteer position that requires a time commitment of approximately 6-10 hours per month. Board meetings typically occur in person, on the third Thursday of odd-numbered months (January, March, May, July, September, and November) at 6 p.m. in addition to an annual meeting and other special meetings. Committee meetings are scheduled as needed by each committee.
