Where does the food come from?

When you’re making 1,000 meals a week from donated food, one of the biggest questions is, “where does all that food come from?” The simple answer is, everywhere! Just about everyone who works in the food system finds themselves with extra now and then. Farms, retailers, distributors, food producers — you name it. What makes our meals most interesting is that we bring in food from such a variety of sources. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Keep Growing Detroit (produce) promotes food sovereignty where the majority of fruits and vegetables consumed by Detroiters are grown by residents within the city’s limits.
  • Pingree Farms (produce) is dedicated to neighborhood revitalization and youth education through urban agriculture and seeks to turn vacant and blighted land into an urban food oasis.
  • Planted Detroit (greens), a group of plant nerds, IT geeks, grocery gurus, and food lovers, grows fresh nutritious greens all year long on Detroit’s east side.
  • Drought (pulp) produces and sells organic, cold-pressed, raw juice in Detroit and beyond.
  • Founders (spent grain) is a large-scale craft brewery founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Are you growing food in your backyard? If you have too much, bring it to us! We accept backyard garden produce donations at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church on Friday mornings from 9 to noon!
