At Make Food Not Waste, our primary mission is to reduce food waste across Michigan as a way to pull the emergency brake on climate change. We accomplish this by leading efforts to transform surplus food into delicious, nutritious meals for those in need, setting a model for dignified community service.
Through our Upcycling Kitchens, we’ve proven that food that would otherwise go to waste can be redirected to create positive change, treating people well while minimizing harm to the environment.
The issue of food waste affects everyone. Each year, Michigan landfills 2 billion pounds of food, emitting roughly 3.4 billion metric tons of CO2e which contributes to severe weather, degraded soil, and biodiversity loss. To make matters worse, 40% of that food could have been eaten. In Michigan, 1.2 million people are food insecure while only 2% of surplus food is donated.
By preventing food waste, we can accomplish two important goals: feeding people and protecting the environment. We’re building a sustainable future for Michigan and invite you to join us.
Investing in Make Food Not Waste makes sure that your philanthropic dollars are put to good use. You’ll have a direct impact on food insecurity and climate change while receiving increased visibility and alignment with your sustainability goals.
